Live and Let Live
Live and Let Live

Whenever talking about slaughtering wild animals I’m getting excited and feel so painful. I still have some recollection of a number of documentary films about Tibetan antelopes. I’m concerned so much about their future and other wild animals’ fate as well. It is very disturbing to think that humans consider they have rights to despoil the lives of other creatures in this planet merely because they need those animals’ fur, skin, teeth and horns to decorate their bodies. I have seen so many bloody, fearsome and pathetical sights from TV, films that how poachers are hunting antelopes in north Tibet upland, hunting lovely little seals in Arctic Ocean and hunting elephants in African grassland … their killing means are horrible and shocking. Often poachers will, in a deuced hurry, strip off the skins from antelopes when they are still alive; some are pregnant antelopes…

It is my conviction that human beings will pay for whatever they have done to the nature. The greatest German thinker Friedrich Engels had warned us a hundred years ago in his [Dialectics of Nature] that “Let us not, however, flatter ourselves overmuch on account of our human victories over nature. For each such victory nature takes its revenge on us.” (1876) Friedrich Engels, as one of the founders of the socialist movement, clearly understood the problems associated with industrialization and urbanization. I have plenty of reasons to worry about that the revenge from nature has just begun. Just think of the dust storms, floods, and droughts here and there in recent years …

Humans, in my eyes, is one of the creatures living in this planet like other creatures. We live and should let other creatures live. It is horrible to think if there is only human being left on the Earth and nothing else! I hope our government will pay much more attention on environmental problems and protect its people from the ravages of pollution.

[此贴子已经被作者于2005-9-22 14:20:22编辑过]

Hi! Dear Jeannie,

I think I am falling love in your writing too! Full of inspiring passion and undeniable advice!

Though the topic of yours is a bit of following the old fashion on talking about environment but it is always a good topic, isn't it? Love our mother nature and forever make it a enlightening talking point for us all!

Jeannie, you are such a warm-hearted girl. Your conviction and passion will burn down everything that is stubbornly standing in your way. I truly wish you could change as much the world as you can through your loving writings.

Hi Charlie,

Your reply gives me a joyful surprise. I have checked almost everyday since I joined this forum and since I sent all those silly letters and articles. However, to my dismay, I find out that very few people visit here and to say nothing of replies, even our forum master Charlie has not paid a glance of them! Is that true?

Charlie, you're killing me to say that I could change a bit of the world. I am nothing, I am an admirer of your beautiful writings!

I hope you'll enjoy your stay in Beijing and let me know if you need help (I'm also in BJ),

Millions of thanks!

Jeannie

To dear Jeannie

Dear Jeannie,

No kidding! You are also in Beijing! Wow! That's cool! Where exactly are you at then in Beijing? Currently I am on a teachers' continuaing educaton program at Peking University, which I really consider to be an honour for a young man like me who had always dreamt of this highest ivory tower in China!

Here I find most students are so hard working and knowledge loving. In the classroom, I see people read so wholeheartedly as if there were nothing else that could give a soul to life as books of knowledge and wisdom. Those students also reminds me of the past days at college when the sky was bluer and grass greener. Such an enjoyable they are leading! I do feel lucky to be sitting again among the books, the students and the wisperings of intelligent minds.

I have no idea whether it's ok for us to meet each other here in Beijing just for fun and friendship, if possible and time permits us. Maybe we together could start a campus writing club or something if you are instrereted.

Writing, to be is so much like driving a motorbike uphill---if you do not persist in going up forward hard then you will surely be dragged down backwards by the force of earth's gravitation. Recently I have been so busy with my Japanese learning (Yeah, I gotta learn it to pass one of the postgraduate entrance exams for English majors) that I simply feel my rusty mind could hardly put me in the right mood for English writing at all. Though I am still reading lots and lots of English books to help get my "brainware" "Englishly" updated here, without proper actual practice, it is not easy to write something that you think you have done your best for.

So, Jeannie, keep writing and tomorrow you will be one of the first rising stars from our forum, our tiny but homy English writing world.

Here is my QQ: 383149696. By the way, I do need your help though during the national holiday period with shopping and turing if you do not mind guiding and shedding some light on a young mind that has long been kept enclosed in a small world of its own.

Your help shall go down with my personal histroy!

Keep in touch!

Dear Charlie,

Congratulations for the rare opportunity of continuing education in Peking University! You are worthy of acclaim! To sit in the classroom of Peking University is also my lifelong dream that can never become true.

Are you teasing me to say that we together could start a campus writing-club? You won’t say that again if you know me better, I’m not good at anything; I’m only a self-taught English learner and longing so much for knowledge.

By the way, I’m wondering how long will the program last because I’m afraid I’ll be fully engaged in the coming national day holiday. I feel guilty to make you disappointed.

Best wishes,

Jeannie

Dear Jeannie,

This program only lasts for half a year, and I am supposed to leave Beijing before the next spring festival. Don't feel guilty at all! We do often meet each other here, right? Hope you'd still be posting your lovely articles during a fully engaged national holiday season.

I was not teasing you about the writing club, though it still sounds like a wishful thinking to myself. To tell you the truth, I have long been thinking about creating a new column on our forum and ting you there as our column manager. What do you think? Self-taught Englsih learner? So what? I dare say that anyone that has ever made an effort at English is more or less a self-taught English learner. The less you depend on a teacher or the famous name of a university, the more you stand on your feet and are telling everybody that you are an independent learner, not a copy machine or anything.

Actually, you make lots of people feel shamed about themselves for they really lack the courage and patience to learn and put what they learned into practice. Jeannie, you have proven to every forum memeber here that you can write and write well. I feel very proud of having you as one of us. You know what? I was so impressed by the passionate thinking in your writing that I thought you must have been an English major from a famous university for years. The passion, the confidence, the kindliness, the ideas, all of them came jumping into my mind like vivid pictures in motion. No kidding; no teasing. You are good at English and, believe me, writing it.

Please do think about starting a new column with me and being its column manager. We need you so much here.

Good luck!

Dear Jeannie,

Please send me emails at this address: wenxiayue@hongen.com.cn. The email you sent me last time has gone nowhere since I have not been using that old address for ages. Or you simly drop me a line through "whisper" at the forum.

I really want to discuss with you the setting up of a new column on our English Writing forum, but this would-be new column should have its own style and theme. It would be very appreciated if you could spend sometime pondering on this idea.

I even ever thought of starting a bilingual column where members could write English as well as Chinese and they can also have their own "works" translated there like those articles in a E-C or C-E book. In that way, they could gain some experience in translation as well. I think that would be cool to see more posts not only in pretty English but also in beautiful Chinese. As an language learner, I guess you know how significant having good command of one's mother toongue while learning a foreign language is.

After all these 6 years of concentrated English learning, I have almost forgotten how to speak and sound like a proper Chinese. And this dealt a tremendous blow to my further study of English. It's like picking up a small grain of sesame while loosening the hold of the water melon that I already have. Translation (which I think is a most necessary means in dealing with lots of aspects of language learning) is always a headache for me, but ironically, I am determined to major in it in my possibly future postgraduate study, though not properly prepared yet.

So taking myself as a lesson, I need a partner like you to set up a new column particularly designed for the most serious English learners and more English majors.

I am waiting for your reply.

Best wishes,
