Dear Anthony,
I think, the "proper expressions" or appropriate words are probably hidden in the vocabulary quite within your reach. The only thing to do is just try digging into your memory and activate those words that lie dormant. The more you make efforts to do so, the more you find your words are getting "proper" or "appropirate". In other words, it is not a matter of "enlarge" but "dig into". Of course this should be well based on a certain language level or proficiency which I strongly believe can be more effectively realized by reading, a great deal of reading.
If you press me for any specific method of "words-activation" , my suggestion is as follows:
Step 1. Start with reading. Keep a habit of unbiased reading both intensively and extensively.
Online reading may help you get acquainted with many current language usages.
Step 2. Review what you have read and try to find a partner for joint oral discussion by brainstorming all those useful or new expressions and shining wordings.
If you cannot find one, do self-reflection or self-discussion, orally (seems to the only way).
Step 3. Write down the content of your discussion or reflection by using your own words, online(recommened[em07]) or in your notebook.
Step 4. Revise your wrting and read it loud to your friends or at least to yourself.
Step 5. Repeat the 5 steps.
Remember no matter what you write, never get shamed or dishearted by inappropriately critical reamrks.
To sum up, it is a simple read-talk(if not workable, skip it)-write procedure. I can garuatee you after no more than several months of doing so, you will feel the words are like flows of fleas jumping up and down in your mind, ready and urged to be released. I have begun feeling so just after I tried this a few months or so.
Is it worth a try? It is all up to you, dear Anthony.
Best wishes
Warmly, Charlie
