Dear Joyen,
I am very impressed by your determinatin on improving your English writing and also your modesty. To me, writing is more a form of entertainment than a task to be finished. That is probably why I have pretty enjoyed writing instead of getting urged to do so. As the old saying goes: interest is the best teacher. Owing to this thinking, I never give myself or anybody else any specific topics. Instead, I would rather when in class guide(at least I think I am guiding them, if not misleading) my students to a particular subject matter or a multifocal point to write about. They may choose whatever aspect they want to probe into. In a word, try to make writing as much as their own. For only by their own ideas and feelings can they touch the heart of their reader, or at least their teacher.

In your case, if you are keeping a diary, there is no need to worry about not having a topic. You jusr write whatever you like, what happened to you during the day, what made you feel most unforgetful of or the most enlightening. If you are to write essays, then being creative is the primary thing as far as I am concerned.
Please do not feel I am giving a lecture for this is truly how I understand it.
Charlie
