Should judges on ‘Super Girl’ be nicer?
“Super Girl” judges are requested not be embarrass contestants with their harsh comments.
‘Super Girl’, the hit talent show by Hunan Satellite Television, is playing hot. More than 400 million people watched last year’s show, making it one of the most successful in Chinese television history.
Yet the government says the show needs stricter regulations. Now rules posted by the State Administration (SARFT) require contestants to be at least 18 years old.
The most controversial regulation concerns judges. They must be “practical and realistic”, “positive and healthy”, and not embarrass contestants.
But some say harsh comments help the contestants improve, and that criticism is an indispensable part of the show.
So what’s your view: should ‘Super Girl’ ban harsh criticism?
In my opinion, there are always two sides to everything
Yes
When judges make harsh comments, teens may get the impression that it’s all right for them to be similarly impolite.
It takes a lot of courage to get up on stage. Contestants already try their best. Couldn’t the judges just say you did a god job or something like that? Something the judges are too mean. They should be more positive.
Most of people want to hear contestants’ singing, not judges’ comments. Something judges say outrageous things to get more attention. This hurts contestants and distracts from the point of the show.
Honesty is good, but so is knowing when to be civil. “Super Girl” is a show targeting teenagers and other young people. When judges make harsh comments, teens may get the impression that it’s all right for them to be similarly impolite. It’s right to request the judges behave themselves.
No
Nasty judges spice up the show with their witty remarks. Sarcasm is the reason people keep watching.
The show’s contestants understand that they might be humiliated on TV before they sign up. It’s part of the premise of the show. Exposing him/herself to criticism is a risk every performer takes before going on the stage. It’s their own choices , why should we intervene?
Nasty judges spice up the show with their witty remarks. Sarcasm is the reason people keep watching. Take away judges’ comments and ‘Super Girl’ wouldn’t be the same.
Chinese people traditionally dislike criticism. But it’s impossible to improving if nobody points out your shortcomings. If contestants are interested in improving their skills, they should learn to take criticism. The truth may sting, but it is more helpful than false praise.
Most things have two handles, as hurtful as healthful. With something itself to shout out, ‘Super Girl’ can be taken by so many people, it’s a bold try and a successful innovation, I think only with this reason is it enough to show its success. In spite of new rules being posted, ‘Super Girl’ is still in high and wide reception. We believe it would be more and more wonderful and support ‘Super Girl’ forever.
