4. The rent is due on the 1st of each month. 房租每月的头一天到期。
A: When do I pay my rent?
A: 什么时候付房租呢?
B: The rent is due on the 1st of each month. You'll have 3 days to
make your payment.
B: 房租每月一号到期。你有三天的时间付(你的房租)。
"due" 是到期的意思, 图书馆的书到期、孕妇的生产日都是用"due" 这个字。
按时付房租是很重要的, 如果晚付了, 通常会被罚钱(late fees)的。
5. Writing a check. 开支票。
A: Who(m) should I write the check to?
A: 支票开给谁呢?
B: Daisy Lee.
B: 李黛西。
口语中, 开支票也可说成 "cut a check"。支票上的"Pay to the order of" 栏填
的是收款人的名字。金额部分, 除了阿拉伯数字外, 还须用英文再填写一次。就像填写中
文支票时要在金额后加个「整」字外, 写英文支票时也要加个"only"。如果你还是不太清

6. fever 发烧
A: Feel my head. I think I have a fever.
A: 摸摸我的头! 我想我发烧了。
B: Yea, you're kind of warm. Do you want to take some Tylenol?
B: 是啊! 你(的头)有点热热的。你要不要吃点Tylenol?
"kind of" 是「有一点儿」的意思。如: "She's kind of round." 是「她长得有
点圆圆的意思。
"Tylenol" 是美国人最常用的「退烧药」(Fever Reducer)、「止痛药」(Pain
Reliever)品牌之一。很多人家里的药柜里都会摆一些这样的东西。这些成药通常在超市
(supermarket)里就可以找到了。不过, 为了安全起见, 你还是应该请教一下他们里面附设的
pharmacy (药房)里的 pharmacist (药剂师)才好。当然, 如果身体真的很不舒服, 还是
要去看医生喔。
7. headache 头痛
A: What's wrong?
A: 怎么了?
B: I have this pounding headache. It's killing me.
B: 我的头很痛. 好难过!
不知道上面这句话是否有更贴切的翻译。总之, "pound" 是「砰砰敲打」的意思。
"a pounding headache" 就是那种好象有东西在敲你的头的那种头痛 - 「ㄎㄨㄤ!」那样
子。还有一种头痛是好象「头痛的要裂开」的样子, 这种头痛叫 "a splitting
headache"。顺便再补述一下刚刚提到的 "pound" 「砰砰敲打」这个字。有些人习惯用力敲键
盘, 如果你觉得很吵, 就可以对他说:"Can you stop pounding the keys, please?" (你能
不能不要那么用力敲键盘哩?)。
8. insomnia 失眠(症)
A: Wow! What are those dark circles under your eyes from?
A: 唉呀! (你)这些黑眼圈从那儿来的呀?
B: Man, I've been suffering from severe insomnia. I've been awake for
3 days now.
B: 哎! 我患了严重的失眠症。我已经三天没睡了。
"insomnia" (失眠)是属于比较正式或医学上的用法。平常口语里面, 「我睡不着
觉」用"I can't sleep."或"I have trouble falling asleep."就可以了。
"under-eye dark circles"就是「黑眼圈」的意思。好玩吧!
9. a running nose 流鼻水
A: I feel so sick. I've been sneezing, coughing and my nose hasn't
stop running.
A: 我好不舒服喔! 我一直打喷嚏、咳嗽, 鼻水也流个不停。
B: Sounds like a very bad cold.
B: 听起来像很严重的感冒。
流鼻水除了"My nose is running."外, 还可以说成 "I have a running nose."
喔!「鼻塞」呢? 「鼻塞」可以说 "My nose is congested." 或简单地说:"My nose
is stuffed."。"congested"和"stuffed"都有「塞」的意思。
10. a sore throat 喉咙痛
A: What happened to your voice?
A: 你的声音怎么搞得?
B: I've got a sore throat.
B: 我喉咙痛。
"sore" 是(因为发炎或受伤的)痛。除了喉咙痛外, 运动的肌肉酸痛也是用 "sore"
这个字。好比: "I'm sore all over." 我全身酸痛。
